In today’s competitive job market, landing your dream job requires more than just an amazing CV. The job application process is a crucial step that can significantly impact your chances of standing out amongst a pool of suitable candidates. To help you succeed in this market, here are some essential tips to consider when applying for a role:
Research the Company
Before you start your application, take the time to thoroughly research the company you’re applying to. Understand its values, goals and culture and make sure the company aligns with your values. You will succeed more in a company that you believe in.
Customise your CV
Resist the urge to send out a generic CV to multiple employers. Tailor your CV for each application by highlighting relevant skills and experiences that are mentioned either in the advert or on the job description. This not only makes your application stand out but also shows your ability to perform the job.
Professional online presence
Ensure that your online presence is professional, employers will look over your LinkedIn profile as well a CV to learn more information about you. Try to interact with people from similar backgrounds and boost your presence in a particular market. A good tip is to try to follow people in the same field of work / skills so that you look relevant. By leveraging your professional network, this will help you gain insights into companies. You should also update your LinkedIn profile and have all your relevant experience on your bio. Make sure under each job you mention some of the day-to-day tasks you completed, any projects you have been involved in and any achievements you’ve accomplished.
Follow application instructions
Pay close attention to the application instructions provided by the employer. Whether it’s submitting a writing sample, including specific documents or answering certain questions, failure to follow instructions can be a red flag for employers. Attention to detail is key.
Showcase acheivements
Even though you have mentioned it on your LinkedIn profile, make sure you emphasise your accomplishments in previous roles on your CV / application. Use quantifiable metrics whenever possible to highlight the impact you’ve had in your previous positions e.g. the projects you have delivered or efficiencies (in either money or time) you have been involved in producing. This provides concrete evidence of your abilities and contributions setting you up to stand out from the crowd.
Follow up
After attending an interview, send a polite follow-up email expressing your gratitude for the opportunity and reiterating your enthusiasm for the position. This reinforces your interest and professionalism.
